Civil Engineering Project - Creating Turtle's Habitat!

We circle back to our Spots of Emotions to describe how we felt while reading about Turtle and his habitat.  What wonderful, thoughtful descriptions of emotions!

Lauren is one of the first friends in the classroom this morning so she gets to help set up our civil engineering project for the day.  Together, we think of as many elements of the perfect turtle habitat so we can recreate it.  Once we make about half the list, Lauren has the idea of looking at our book from yesterday to remind us of what we saw and talked about.
Sure enough!  That does the trick!  Check out the list Lauren made of the perfect turtle habitat :)

Next step is to get busy!  Friends spent an hour and a half building turtle habitats.
After a little time, they begin building bridges, ladders, and tunnels over, under, and around Turtle's pond.  These are wonderful solutions to replace building a road directly THROUGH a habitat ultimately destroying it!  We are proud to be helpers of both humans and animals!

Part of our rich conversation about this lovely habitat was about frogs, toads, snakes, newts, lizards, and of course, turtles.  We talked about amphibians and reptiles and how these creatures often use the sun to raise their temperature and warm up.
Here, some of these little guys are "basking in the sun" to warm up.

We often recap our work from the morning during meeting.  Here, we talk about our process for creating Turtle's habitat and the engineering we started.  We also talk about next steps and how we will continue our quest to save Turtle and his friends!

Discoverers Civil Engineering Project - Save Turtle's Habitat!

We have called on all our kind, creative, solution-oriented civil engineers to help us solve a problem.  Our friend Turtle, who we met today during a class read aloud, has lost his perfect turtle habitat to a new road being built over his pond.  I've asked friends to think of various ways that we can help Turtle save his habitat.  This lead to a wonderful discussion about animals (both nocturnal and diurnal) and their habitats, how human lifestyles can change these habitats, and the importance of balancing both the needs of humans AND those of animals, plants, and other living creatures.  You should have seen friends' faces when the construction vehicles began filling in Turtle's pond...those little empaths were having none of it!  They began brainstorming solutions to this problem before I could even get a chance to ask them!  What a wonderful, thoughtful group of kiddos you have ❤️

Stay tuned over the next several days as we begin to put our ideas into action.  We will use creative materials to recreate Turtle's habitat and then start to engineer alternate solutions to filling in his pond.  Perhaps a bridge?  A tunnel?  A road elsewhere?  I can't wait to see what friends come up with!
